A condition where the bones lose calcium and become weak.

None. Until the bones fracture. Then pain and loss of height may occur. Serious fractures may involve hospitalisation. Some patients do not survive.

"Dowagers Hump" is a sign of osteoporosis.

In the UK, one in two women and one in five men may suffer. Further risk factors include family history, early (or surgical ) menopause, smoking, poor diet or excessive alcohol consumption.

·         So What's This Scan Then?

A DEXA scan measures the bone's mineral content. Low density may indicate osteoporosis. It is a simple X-ray of the wrist.

The process takes a few minutes and is completely painless.

The results are available immediately, a printout is included in the price.

The scan is usually done at a location such as a surgery or clinic.

The cost depends on the individual clinic charge, at present the maximum charge is £40 but some clinics offer a small discount. Please ring for details.
